This is not an Irish folksong! Written about Salford.

I was singing in an irish pub in Quincy Massachusetts USA last night and someone requested this song. I worked on it a few years ago but didn't know it well enough to perform it last night. So today I'm on youtube learning it for next time. Lo and behold I'm learning it from the man who wrote it! Previously I assumed the High Kings had written it as that was the version I was familiar with. I love that "job" really only rhymes with "pub" if it is sung in an irish accent :) Congratulations on writing a great song that will live forever!!!

I just wanted to let you know for me, your videos are the best. Clear, simple and to the point. I am a massive fan of Irish music, listening The Dubliners and The Pogues, and finally thanks to you, I can play songs all the way through. Wishing you all the best my friend.

Not even an Irish song. Just because the Pogues had a hit with it didn't make it Irish. It was written in England, by an Englishman, about a town in England. The writer's Scottish folk roots do come through, but Irish? Nope.

I first heard this song by Roger Whittaker and later by The Spinners from Liverpool. It's always been one of my favorite songs. Whittaker's version starts with "I met my love by the gas works croft". Thanks for the tutorial, Brian!

Beautiful songs - great tutorials

Just found this. How wonderful and so true, but there are much more than four Irish pubs here in Sydney (The Mercantile is my favourite). My Ancestry DNA analysis gives me links to West Donegal (through my Great Granny). Probably why I feel this music so much.

This song was written by Ewan Mcoll in 1949. It is about his home town: Salford in Lancashire. It speaks out against capitalism and life in the smog and slums of Salford. The words about making an axe and chopping it down like an old tree, refers to his hatred of capitalism. It was performed by the Dubliners but it's English.
